Quiet Light’s new EP, ‘Stories I Am Now Telling You’, comes out on April 8th.
The EP begins with previously released single, ‘Alight’, and it immediately surrounds you in the glowing ambience of Riya Mahesh’s music. It is a song of adoration so strong it doesn’t need to be requited.
‘Stories I Am Now Telling You’ lives in perfect harmony between mellow acoustic and laid-back indie; between city skylines and early morning light; between The National’s ‘I Am Easy To Find’ and ‘Boxer’.
What feels special about this EP to me is its cohesiveness. The first line heard is “you were talking about moving to the West Coast”, and Quiet Light closes the EP with a much more sombre echo of this. Now when she sings the line, it is not with the same idealisation and hopefulness that it once was. ‘Blue Screen’, the last song on ‘Stories I Am Now Telling You’, feels like Riya closing a door on all of that. When she laughs and sighs at this person she once romanticised, it’s the same contentment as reading the last page of a book that ended, maybe not how you expected it to, but how it should have.
