Let me set the scene… you’re standing in a dim high school auditorium, illuminated by a disco ball fracturing coloured light across the hall. Peers pass you by in a blur of cheaply rented suits and fruit-scented body mist, and in the middle of the room stands your high school crush, arm extended towards you, light glittering in their eyes.
Lover’s Eye, the debut EP from Eerie Please, deliciously captures this exact moment and turns it into a five-song synth dreamscape. While only having begun to release music recorded in their bedroom during the first pandemic lockdown in New York City, Eerie Please has catapulted onto the music scene, having been featured on HBO’s We Are Who We Are.
The opening track Silently Like A Dream begins with a hypnotic synth layered over a quiet heartbeat, and the EP seemingly comes alive. The name of the EP, Lover’s Eye, comes from the hauntingly lyrics, pleading “Sparing my lover’s eyes, save your words, be mine”. This vulnerable longing and passion oozes throughout the entire EP, accompanied by the smooth dance-cry synth (which is accurate – you can both dance and cry to the music).
Eerie Please’s lyrics are nothing short of poetic; the words drip with vulnerability and honesty. Spark, the lead single of the EP, feels like looking at a fire through a kaleidoscope, watching sparks like fireworks explode and fizzle out. My personal favourite song Girl’s Bones, the final track of the EP, once again brilliantly displays Eerie Please’s deep craving for connection with a lover. As the synths fade out to silence, you’re left floundering in a sense of heartache and peace, a combination which makes Eerie Please’s stand-out debut EP so addicting.
