Recently our writer Chlöe got to interview Justin from Glove a new wave band hailing from Tampa, Florida. Glove have recently released their debut album Boom Nights, (listen here ) Just finishing some dates with Notions of a Language, Glove will now set out on some dates with A Place To Bury Strangers. Chlöe spoke to Justin about all things music, working with Brad Shultz from Cage the Elephant and so much more!
First, thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions! How are all of you?
We’re all doin good! just got back from tour & have been enjoying our down time before heading back out!
Can you give us a little background on who GLOVE is? How did you all meet, and how did GLOVE come to be?
So Rod & Brie used to be in a band called Veiny Hands together then shortly after disbanding they started up Glove with Michelle! I joined a bit after they formed, I was playing a solo set opening for them & they scooped me up! We instantly all connected & it just seemed like it was meant to be.
Where did the name GLOVE come from?
I remember Rod saying it was inspired by the unreleased cover art for Is This It? by The Strokes
Your album Boom Nights was produced by Brad Shultz from Cage the Elephant (which is so cool) - how did that come to happen, and what was it like working together to make this album come to life?
We met Brad through our friend Kane actually! We were playing Spewfest in Nashville & Kane mentioned his cousin was gonna come out. We ended up getting along really well and Brad mentioned the idea of producing our record. It was really cool for us cause we never have been in a studio setting like that working with a producer, so I think it was a perfect introduction into that realm. A lot of lifetime friendships came from this!
Did he share any advice?
Yeah totally! He had a lot of cool ideas & pushed us to try a lot of different things
Speaking of your album, there’s a strong 80s, new-wave influence - may I ask where that inspiration came from?
We all listen to a little bit of everything but just really bonded over artists like The Cure, Depeche Mode, Gary Numan, etc.
Did you grow up with that kind of music growing up, did you discover it when you were older, etc.?
I personally grew up listening to The Cure because of my parents like the first time I sang in front of people was at my Aunt’s karaoke wedding after party when I was 6 to “Friday Im In Love!” So I think they were definitely the most crucial band in my musical development
What was your creative process when writing the songs on Boom Nights? Do you have a ‘formula’ for how your songs come to be?
Every song was different! We don’t really stick to a strict formula on how we write. I’d say we chase feelings & try to let things come naturally. Sometimes someone will start playing something cool at practice & we all start adding, sometimes Rod works in an idea & i’ll write the lyrics / vocals. Really no set way of doing things!
You’re hitting the road a lot this summer, and you’re sharing the stage with some incredible names! What are you most excited about?!
I think we are really excited about everything! We’re incredibly grateful to be playing with so many amazing artists! I think the Jack White shows are gonna be really special! I grew up listening to The White Stripes & those are some of the first songs I learned on guitar.
Any cities you’re most excited to perform in, or songs you’re most excited to play live in front of an audience?
We’re looking forward to be returning to the West Coast so soon in May with A Place to Bury Strangers! We haven’t spent too much time out there + we’re finally going to Canada.
I think another aspect I always enjoy when seeing a band live, besides the actual band, is hearing what they have playing on their playlist prior to getting on stage! What are you all listening to right now? New music? Forever favorites?
Dummy, Snooper, Nation of Language.
I know we asked about advice given to you, but do you have any advice for those wanting to start a band and do what you’re doing? What do you think it takes to get started in music?
Just do it! If you have the will & passion to do something, that’s truly all you need! We are all self taught & still learning!
Thank you so much again for speaking with us! We always love to ask this, but do you think we should be listening to and keeping an eye out for? Anyone else you’d love for us to feature on underground?
Thanks for having us! Definitely checkout Snooper, Nation of Language, & Dummy!
