"last minute" by bathtub milk

Bathtub Milk had their first ever band practice this past October. The video is on their Instagram, recorded in somebody’s kitchen, feeling as DIY as it comes. Looking back on that first post, it’s hard to believe how little time has passed since then: Bathtub Milk sounds as if they’ve been in the game forever. The three-piece Toronto rock outfit (Ava Close on vocals, Nathan Burg on guitar, and Sasha Drotenko on bass) are perfect for fans of SWMRS and Destroy Boys, filling in on grit and headbanging where those groups may leave off. Their debut EP Last Minute (released March 17) only escalates that further.

Though on the shorter side at eleven minutes long, Last Minute is anything but sweet. Opening track “I’m Sick” starts dark and acoustically. Close mocks her listeners with childlike conviction (“I’m sick of all of your kiddie taunts”), putting whoever may who wronged her into their place. “Just Shut Up” is on the poppier side; a fast switch that seeps together well. Bathtub Milk, however, are quick to show they aren’t one trick ponies. Songs like “Cable TV” are slower and moodier, taking on darker undertones. “M4ke M3 Ded” revs things up with a steady riff that permeates all the way through. Close questions, “You really think you’re all that?”, and we begin to wonder if we are. The album ends with “Unsubscribe,” an ode for a modern age that thrives off cancel culture. We’re left with the will to get rid of everyone we don’t need in our lives, feeling stronger than ever.

Last Minute’s title may bring memories of finishing up homework the night before it’s due, but this record is anything but rushed. It’s the perfect balance of grit and emotion, the unique blend of punk, folk and emo creating the band’s signature sound. Bathtub Milk feels more mature and established than they may actually be. Cole Becker better be on the lookout; Bathtub Milk are on their way to taking over this scene for good.
