a preshow chat with destroy boys

Hi friends! It is me, Eva. I had the amazing opportunity to interview one of my favorite bands right now, Destroy Boys, before their show with The Regrettes in DC. I'm trying so hard to not like. go off on a tangent about how great Destroy Boys are so all I'm going to say is: they are some of the kindest and most talented musicians out there right now, so do yourself a favor and check them out before they take over the world!

-P.S. CHECK OUT THE PHOTO GALLERY FROM THIS SHOW-

can you introduce yourselves? alexia: hi, i’m alexia, i sing in the band, i’m 18 vi: my name is vi, i’m 18 and i play guitar in the band vi impersonating blake: i’m blake, i’m here right now, i play bass and i’m 20 narsai: i’m narsai and i’m the bongo boy for destroy boys how did you meet and start playing music together under the name destroy boys? alexia: vi and i met through mutual friends, we met him (narsai) because he emailed us, blake is in another band called Cardboard Houses and we watched them play and we were like “that dude’s good at bass” so we asked him to play for us what was the writing and recording process for your latest ep like? vi: writing has been going on for over a year, these songs we took a lot more time with. We wrote Crybaby and Vixen in early spring 2017 alexia: i wrote mine over the summer vi: yeah, i wrote Crybaby in February of 2017 and we kind of nurtured those songs until we went into the studio in October and banged them out. It was really different, we put a lot of care and time into it instead of just being like “alright this song is done now” do you think you’ve changed musically at all from your earlier releases to the release of your latest single american river? vi and alexia: yeah oh my god alexia: it’s just like, fucking better. We’ve kind of just become better musicians vi: i think we’ve incorporated a lot more musical dynamics that take a good amount of time to learn narsai: the additional bass alexia: oh yeah, adding bass made it completely change the game what was the inspiration behind the music video for american river? alexia: it’s about high school, the song is about high school and i wrote it about the school i went to and all the shit that i used to do at it. We wanted to film it at a school so that we could keep it true to the song because that was kind of the point, that school sucks and shit like that, so that’s kind of what we wanted the music video to be centered around do you take any influence from your local music/diy community? everyone: fuck yeah vi: that’s the reason that we started being a band, we would go out and see bands in Sacramento like Rad, who’s a female fronted band out of Sacramento -blake joins the interview- blake: i’m blake, i’m the bass player, i used to be in another band called Cardboard Houses and then this band asked me to join them and i was like hell yeah narsai: we have to shoutout our friend Burd alexia: fucking amazing, watching musicians that i know be really good at music has pushed me to also be better at music narsai: we’re so lucky that our friends are super talented musicians blake: that’s how i get pumped at shows, i watch the openers and it’s like Woah could you use 3 words to describe your live shows? vi: high-fi, which is basically high energy alexia: the first word that comes to mind is sweaty blake: can i put fun in there vi: high-fi, sweaty, fun alexia: wait. interactive who are some of your favorite local musicians? narsai: Burd all the way, from San Francisco alexia: yeah, definitely Burd blake: for me, it’d be Flight Mongoose from Sacramento vi: our homies Hobo Johnson, they’re not technically local anymore

I want to thank Destroy Boys again for letting me interview them, seriously some of my new favorite people!!
